Breast Reduction

Large breasts are thought of as being the perfect breasts and for some they may be but they can also cause debilitating physical problems that can be a bit too much to bear. Neck pain and back pain are the most common physical issues that are caused by large breasts.

Sometimes large breasts can cause difficulties with breathing, skin irritation from bra straps, and even make exercise virtually impossible. If you have breasts that are large and out of proportion to your body there are also psychological issues in addition to the physical, there may be feelings of self consciousness if people constantly comment which can cause a great deal of social discomfort.

Mammoplasty or breast reduction surgery is the solution for most women in this situation. Mammoplasty reduces the breasts so that they are smaller, firmer and a more pleasing shape that are in proportion to the rest of your body and can also reduce the areola size as well to be in proportion to the newly reduced breast. The ultimate aim of course is to improve the quality of your life.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Reduction

There are number of reasons that women desire to have smaller breasts and the best way to find out if breast reduction surgery will be good for you and address your issues is to talk to our experienced clinician who can provide you with advice regarding whether this surgery is ideal for you.

The Breast Reduction Surgery

This surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic. One of the most common ways of performing breast reduction surgery is through the use of an upside down T-shaped opening that goes around the areola and down following the curve of the crease that is located underneath the breast.

Then the nipples are repositioned and the skin from either side of the breast is moved down and circling the areola. If there is excess fat located in the area of the armpit then liposuction may be used at this point to reduce it.

Usually the blood vessels and nerves of the nipples will continue to be attached however if the breasts are overly large or sagging then it is sometimes necessary to remove the nipples totally so that they can be attached in a higher position – the drawback with this is that the nipple will lose sensation.

The Stay in Hospital

With breast reduction surgery an overnight stay in hospital is necessary so that your progress can be monitored and that the doctor can be confident that the drains are functioning as they should and that your pain is under control before you go home.

The Recovery Time

It is suggested to patients that a minimum of two weeks recovery time away from work is necessary. You will feel some general some general soreness for about four days following the surgery and it will be two weeks before it is recommended that you return to your normal activities but avoid any stretching for six weeks.

During the time that you are recovering you will really need to rest. Make sure that you have help for the necessary chores around the house, don’t lift anything that weighs more than 5 kgs and it is not advisable to drive.
